How can I get started?

A great way to begin archery is by attending the Beginners Class offered by the Woodley Park Archers. Beginner Classes are every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM. Registration is required; see the Classes & Activities page for more information.

When are archery classes held?

Woodley Park Archers offers free introductory archery instruction to the community.  Beginner Classes are every Saturday from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM and on Wednesdays from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  Arrive at least thirty minutes early to get into class.  Registration is required; more complete information can be found on our Classes & Activities page.

I have never shot before! How difficult are your classes?

Our instructional program is designed for brand new students who have never shot archery before.  Safety rules and procedures and shooting fundamentals are explained and demonstrated and each student gets brief one on one instruction and supervision with a WPA Coach.

Can children take these classes?

Children are welcome, but they must be at least 9 years old and accompanied by an adult.  The adult must sign a registration form on behalf of the minor child, and must remain present on the range at all times while the minor child is shooting.

Is archery difficult?

Archery can be challenging for all, especially children.  Adequate levels of mental attention, strength and physical coordination are required to shoot safely and successfully.  Since archery is a shooting sport, all students regardless of age, must be capable in the opinion of the instructor staff, of safely and comfortably handling all archery equipment, listening to instructions and following all range safety rules and procedures.

Can children shoot on the range during non class open shooting times?

Yes, children may shoot as long as they have their own equipment and are accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian at all times, and follow all range safety rules and procedures.

May I drop my child off at the range to practice archery?

No, minor children may not be dropped off at the range or be present anywhere on the range without the presence and supervision of their parent or guardian.

Is advanced registration required to take the beginner class?

Does everyone who comes to the classes have to register?

Our insurance requires all participants who intend to go through our instruction and shoot to complete a registration form and sign a waiver.  Those who are only observing are not required to complete a registration form unless they are accompanying and supervising a minor child.  Then the parent or guardian must complete and sign the registration form on behalf of the minor child.

Are the Beginners Classes held when it rains?

Woodley Park Archers Free Beginning Archery Class is held every Saturday morning year round, unless it is raining.

Are the Beginners Classes crowded?

Currently, registration is limited to 30 students, so classes are currently not crowded anymore.

How early must one arrive to get into class?

It is advisable to arrive at least 30 minutes before class time, although earlier is better. Check-in closes at 9:10am; anyone arriving after 9:10am will not  be able to check in without refund as the safety class will have officially started.

Who teaches your classes?

All our instructors are members of Woodley Park Archers, and certified by USA Archery and/or National Field Archery Association who volunteer their time to teach in our free instructional program.

If I already know how to shoot, do I have to attend class first?

Experienced archers do not need to take our free beginner course to shoot at the range during open recreational shooting times, however all archers who wish to shoot during our beginner classes must have gone through our safety course, and all shooters must follow all range rules and safety procedures at all times.

What hours is the range open?

Woodley Park Archery Range is open  from sunrise to sundown, seven days a week, except during WPA classes, activities and events (check the WPA Range Schedule for more information.)  Archers with their own equipment are free to shoot during these times subject to following all range safety rules and procedures.

Do I have to pay to shoot at Woodley Park Archery Range?

There is no cost to shoot at the range.  It is free and open to the public for recreational shooting, except during classes and scheduled events and activities.

Do I have to belong to Woodley Park Archers to shoot at the range?

No, membership in Woodley Park Archers is not required to shoot at the range with your own equipment during open recreational shooting.  Woodley Park Archers does not loan out or rent equipment during non class times.

Is archery equipment available to borrow or rent?

No, Woodley Park Archers archery equipment is not available to rent or borrow during non class times; equipment is only available for use during our WPA instruction classes.  Equipment is not available to borrow or rent during non class times.

Is private instruction available?

Yes, private instruction is available by appointment only.  No walk in lessons are available. See instructors at the range for details or contact wpa4info@gmail.com for further information.

Is there a good place for me to learn about the basics of archery?

How can I become a member of the Woodley Park Archers?

Go to our registration page and create an account, if you don’t have one already. Once your registration is confirmed, you can head to the membership section in the menu.

What is my membership fee used for?

Membership fees help support the free instruction classes, equipment, maintenance of the range facility, including bales for the long range and the short range.

How can my child become part of the WPA JOAD program?

Our Woodley Park Archers Junior Olympic Archery Development Program is open by invitation only, to young archers up to age 18 years, who have adequate archery shooting experience, and demonstrate talent and commitment to serious pursuit of the sport of archery.

Can groups and private parties reserve part of the range?

Yes, they can, subject to certain requirements and restrictions including reserving range space in advance and providing proof of qualified supervision and proof of insurance, and subject to other limitations. Are crossbows and broadheads allowed?

Crossbows and broad heads are NOT allowed anywhere on the Woodley Park Range due to issues of safety and range damage.

Do you have a lost and found?

Yes! Found archery equipment and personal items are turned in and stored. Our lost and found can be accessed during class times. Classes are Wednesday night 6 – 8 pm, Saturday 9 am – 12 pm, and most Tuesday nights 5 – 7 pm. Classes are occasionally canceled and our lost and found may not be available.
